A few weeks ago I had the pleasure of chatting for the Teacher/Jetsetter podcast with two former colleagues over Zoom, Craig Eldred (@CraigSEldred) and Marcus Down (@Down_with_PE). Craig is currently in Australia and Marcus is in British Columbia. Thankfully, the timing worked out and I spent a chill Korean Sunday morning catching up on life and family (we all have kids that were much tinier when we worked together). We spent a bit of time talking about tips on how to get your foot in the door for aspiring international school teachers, how to stand out during the recruitment season (hint: QR codes), and why teaching abroad is an experience that you just can’t replicate at home.
Craig, Marcus and I worked at a school in Abu Dhabi several years ago. I have fond memories of my time there. It was also a busy time for me and my wife as working parents raising a toddler, and eventually, another baby. One thing I did not do, however, is post a lot of pictures on this blog. The UAE has some stringent laws relating to taking photos in public, and I heard stories of people getting in trouble for pictures they’ve posted on social media. So during my time there, for this reason and a couple of others, I made the decision not to do much street photography in the country. But years later, this episode got me thinking about Abu Dhabi, so I’m sharing some of my favourites here.
Hope you enjoy the episode and these pictures. Take care!
